Don’t you love it when a park just has it all?
Hugh Macrae Park has been around for a while in Wilmington, and it is truly a public space that brings together the community and multiple interests.
Gatherings ranging from birthdays to baby showers are hosted within the 6 open picnic shelters year-round, and the park is host to several sports sites, including 4 baseball fields, 4 tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, and a full-size basketball court. If you bring your furry friend along, there are off-leash dog parks (for both the big and small) where they can roam free and play with their fellow pooches. Hugh Macrae even covers the more niche hobbies, including an equestrian ring and an outdoor exercise station.

Kids love the expanded interactive playground. If you lived in Wilmington back in the day, you’ll know what a difference there is between then and now. The biggest draw in warm weather though, is the newly built splash pad. Funded by the Trillium Health Resources’ Play Together Grant, the splash pad was completed and opened on April 1, 2017. April through October, kids play, dance, and splash from 9:00 AM to sundown. It was designed to be all-inclusive – even toddlers can play in the outer rim area, and water-friendly wheelchairs are available by calling (910) 798-7275.

Many use the pond and gazebo area as a place to take photos, do yoga, or simply relax on a blanket. Nestled lower into the park, this little oasis is a quiet spot to rest when you’re finished walking, playing, splashing, and laughing.
