We believe the official website says it best on this historic monument:

“Moored in quiet dignity and majesty the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, across the river from downtown Wilmington, beckons visitors to walk her decks.“

A staple and National historic landmark of Wilmington, the Battleship has been open for tours for the past 57 years, and serves as a memorial in honor of the 11,000 North Carolinians who gave their lives in World War II.

Battleship NORTH CAROLINA was the first of 10 ships to be constructed for the American fleet in World War II, and was considered “the world’s greatest sea weapon”. She took part in every major naval offensive, and was claimed to be sunk 6 times. After the war, NORTH CAROLINA was decommissioned in June of 1947. In 1958, news spread around North Carolina of the choice to scrap the vessel. A statewide campaign – titled Save Our Ship – was launched, and led to the Battleship arriving in our Cape Fear River on October 2, 1961.

The Battleship since then has been host to year-round tours (even on holidays) and several annual events. Popular gatherings include the Easter Egg Hunt, Batty Battleship’s Halloween Bash, and the Memorial Day Observance (May 28th  2018 at 5:00 PM)

The Battleship is available for birthday parties, VIP tours, and even full rental of the ship. Battleship NORTH CAROLINA was listed as a Unique Wedding Reception Site on theknot.com, and the deck makes an incredible party platform to dance under the stars.
